Loretta is playing alone in her garden when the little fairy appears. The little fairy is in trouble with the other fairies, and she's been sent to our world to grow up.

So Loretta decides to help her. She takes her to school to learn to read and write and tries to teach her grown-up things. Loretta and the Little Fairy book nothing works, until the little fairy herself finds the solution.

A pleasant, if unexceptional, story about a lonely little girl who meets a fairy just her size. Though she can't do ``real magic'' until she grows up, ``Fairy'' is often invisible. Hoping to help her grow up, Loretta takes the fairy to school to learn to read and then home to bake a cake; but it's helping Loretta make friends with despised Karen next door that wins the fairy her coveted adulthood.

The Green Forest Fairy Book is a good read. It's not made up of traditional stories, though all of the tales contain well-known fairy tale elements of one sort or another.
